Newcastle United transfer news - Guehi transfer stance, Almiron decision (2024)

Newcastle United are closing in on some significant transfer moves as they continue talks with Crystal Palace over England defender Marc Guehi. The Magpies are looking to make a marquee signing this summer, and have identified the centre-back, who impressed at EURO24 as a key target.

United have already secured the signings of Lloyd Kelly, Odysseas Vlachodimos, John Ruddy, Lewis Hall and Miodrag Pivas but they are still in the market for a new centre-half and a right-winger. William Osula is set to sign from Sheffield United, with the youngster brought in as an attacking back-up to Alexander Isak and Callm Wilson.

There could yet be some exits too, with Wilson and Kieran Trippier linked with moves away, while there is speculation over the future of Martin Dubravka after Vlachodimos and Ruddy's arrival Newcastle have already sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Miguel Almiron continues to be linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

We'll keep on top of all the latest Newcastle transfer news right here, with live updates as they happen each and every day.

Howe sent England warning

Eddie Howe has been told he should not be bothered with international football and that he is managing one of the biggest clubs in the country.

Howe has been linked with succeeding Gareth Southgate as England manager, but has been told Tony Pulis to remain where he is.

He told Betway: “In my opinion, I don't think managers of Eddie Howe's age and experience should go into international management.

“Newcastle are one of the top clubs in the country in respect to supporters and everything else, I don't think Eddie should be bothered with international football.

"I think he's shown his cards straight away. I think the Newcastle supporters will appreciate that. I really do think they'll have a good season this year. He's a good manager, he knows what he wants, he's clever.

"He works the media and the press brilliantly. But underneath that nice, cool, calm, collective demeanour, I know Eddie, there's a streak of steel down his back. I'm sure he'll be desperately keen to get Newcastle back up in the top six this year.”

Martin provides Fraser transfer update

Russell Martin has revealed Southampton are 'nowhere near a deal' to bring Ryan Fraser back to the club.

Fraser joined Southampton on a season-long loan and helped the club return to the Premier League in the process.

Speculation has been rife that the Scotland international will return to the South Coast this summer, but a deal is yet to be completed.

And providing an update on the situation, Martin told talkSPORT: “I am not sure that will happen. That’s down to Newcastle.

“He did brilliantly for us last season, and I love him as a person and a player. He was really popular with the dressing room, fans and staff, but we are nowhere near a deal for Ryan.

“The longer it goes on, it looks increasingly unlikely.”

Keane makes Newcastle prediction

Roy Keane believes Southampton will cause an upset this weekend and pick up all three points against Newcastle United.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane predicted: “I think Southampton surprise everyone. Southampton 2-1.”

The Saints, who won promotion to the top-flight last season, travel to St. James' Park on Saturday.

Newcastle will hold firm on Miguel Almiron

Newcastle United are in no mood to let Miguel Almiron leave on the cheap this summer with Eddie Howe still viewing the winger as a key member of his St James' Park squad.

Chronicle Live reported earlier on the fact any potential move to MLS side Charlotte FC was off due to the north American outfit being unable to meet Newcastle's financial demands. This is hardly surprising given the league record arrival stands at $16million [£12.5m] and Charlotte themselves have never spent more than $8m [£6.25m] on an incoming player.

Newcastle may not get the full £21m they paid Atlanta United back in 2019 but there is zero appetite to sell Almiron for a substantially lower fee given his top flight experience and importance to Howe's setup. An MLS move was always a complicated one to pull off and with that particular transfer window closing at 5am BST on Thursday, August 15, an exit this summer becomes even more unlikely.

Crystal Palace have slapped a huge price tag on Marc Guehi as he continues to be linked with Newcastle United.

According to Il Resto del Carlino, via TuttoBolognaWeb, Newcastle made what has been described in the report as a 'survey' for the Cape Verde man.

The report, via Sport Witness, also claims that Bologna are interested in signing the 23-year-old this summer.

Liverpool 'step up' Mamardashvili interest

Earlier today we brought the news from Spain that Giorgi Mamardashvili was closing in on a move to Liverpoool.

The Georgia international has been linked with a move to Newcastle United this summer, but now it appears that Mamardashvili could be on his way to Merseyside.

That's because, according to Paul Joyce of The Times, Liverpool have stepped up their interest in the Valencia goalkeeper and believe his mooted price tag of about £30million would represent excellent value.

Although the report goes on to claim that he would not replace Alisson as the club’s No1 this season and he could be loaned to another club to continue his development.

Newcastle 'quite confident' of landing Guehi

Newcastle United are 'quite confident' of securing the signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace before the end of the transfer window.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed: "Negotiations are ongoing on this one. Newcastle are, I would say, quite confident they have returned with a new bid, that they are in direct contact with Crystal Palace.

"Palace always wanted something like £65 million for Marc. So that's why the negotiation has always been difficult, but the interest is still there."

Best atmosphere results

We all know how loud St James' Park can be - anyone who was there for those Champions League games last season probably still has ringing in their ears.

Now a new Betfair/YouGov survey has ranked the atmosphere inside Premier League grounds - with SJP coming out well.

Anfield tops the list after fans were asked which grounds they enjoyed the most, with Newcastle and Liverpool fans crowned best away supporters in the league.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer knows all about St James', of course, but has happy Anfield memories too.

Betfair Ambassador Shearer said: “St James' Park has always been a special place. Anfield is always a unique atmosphere - even as an opposing player, stood there listening to You'll Never Walk Alone, it's a really good atmosphere.

“When I played at Anfield with Blackburn and won the league that was a very different atmosphere, because the Liverpool fans didn't want Man United to win the league, yet they wanted Liverpool to win, and they also wanted Kenny Dalglish to win it for Blackburn, that was a different atmosphere but a unique one and one that I enjoyed.

“I always remember getting the goal to beat Jackie Milburn's record. The atmosphere was off the charts at St James' Park and if I could've bottled up that atmosphere it would've been amazing.

“For me to go away, learn my trade and come back ten years later, then to break the record in front of the Gallowgate End where I used to stand as a young kid - it doesn't get any better than that for me.”

Almiron latest

Charlotte FC won't be returning with an improved bid for Miguel Almiron, according to reports. We reported how the MLS side had a bid for the Newcastle winger turned down, with the offer well short of United's valuation.

The transfer deadline in the States is today, and no new bid is expected from Charlotte for the Paraguayan.

William Osula

William Osula has revealed how Newcastle United fans blew him away by catching him off guard with a warm ovation when he was substituted on his Toon bow.

The £10million signing was applauded off in generous manner in the 1-0 win against Stade Brestois and could have even been leaving the field with a debut goal had he not been flagged marginally offside. In a summer that has not resulted in any marquee arrivals Osula's bright display was one of the undoubted positives for Eddie Howe at the Sela Weekender.

And Osula has opened up on the moment that left him choked after seeing his number come up before fans took to their feet to make the 21-year-old star feel 10 feet tall.

Guehi deal 'not impossible'

Newcastle United have been told the door is still open to buy Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace after their latest bumper offer was turned down.

The Magpies are pondering whether to move on to other targets after putting together an overall transfer package that would smash their own club record. But yesterday Palace chairman Steve Parish quoted a "superstar" price tag for the 24-year-old England international who shone brightly at the European Championships in Germany.

Rumours have again surfaced of interest from Newcastle in Toulouse defender Logan Costa. The French-born Cape Verde international could be available for around £20m.

Giorgi Mamardashvili

Newcastle were heavily linked with a move for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili earlier in the transfer window, but according to Relevo, Liverpool have bid €35million (£30m) for the Georgian.

It has been said that the Valencia owner will decide in the next few hours but Mamardashvili is waiting for the agreement to join the Reds. The outlet has claimed that Mamardashvili wants Valencia to accept the offer as he views it as an opportunity that may only come once in his life.

KEY EVENT

Guehi transfer stance

Marc Guehi is not pushing for a transfer from Crystal Palace amid Newcastle United interest, although Eagles chairman Steve Parish acknowledges the players wants to 'progress' his career.

The Magpies have been unable to reach a deal with Palace over the England defender with talks ongoing.

"Marc Guehi is as decent a human being and footballer as you could ever possibly hope to meet and we all know the situation," Parish told Sky Sports News. "We don't need to be having discussions about it.

"Marc is absolutely loyal to Crystal Palace. Marc wants to progress his career - of course he does - and if the right opportunity is there and it's right for us, I think it's something that he might be interested in but he's certainly not putting any pressure on the club whatsoever."

Are Newcastle strong this season?

The new Premier League season is fast approaching and the internal ambition within Newcastle United is to regain a top four spot after last term's unfortunate slip down the top flight table. Work is being done behind the scenes to improve Eddie Howe's squad further after a tricky time in the summer market to date - and the Toon head coach knows the importance of his group raising their game for the campaign ahead.

"It [the league] will be harder - it always is," Howe told reporters over the weekend. "The game evolves so quickly, the coaches improve, the players improve. So this will be the hardest [season] yet. We're under no illusions but we believe we're improving and developing our game all the time."

Howe has been hard at work implementing tactical, pre-season tweaks to a team that has flourished playing high-pressing, fast-paced and exciting football in recent seasons and he is confident his team have improved as a result.

But while from the outside Newcastle look to have a lot falling in their favour, their rivals have also been hard at work ensuring they too are in a stronger position come the first game of the new campaign. With that in mind, Chronicle Live assesses exactly how the teams in and around Newcastle have gone about strengthening their respective squads since the conclusion of last season.

Aaron Ramsdale

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is someone who has been linked with Newcastle United several times in several windows. The England keeper looks set to leave the Gunners this summer, but with the Magpies having signed Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy as back up to Nick Pope, talks of a Tyneside switch has cooled.

And it's now emerged that Ajax are keen on Ramsdale, with the Dutch giants ready to offer him first-team football.

'Movement' expected on outgoings

Newcastle United are hoping for movement in terms of first-team outgoings before the Premier League opener with Southampton this weekend.

The Magpies offloaded Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson in a PSR-induced panic earlier this summer after releasing five first-team stars in Loris Karius, Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett, Jeff Hendrick and Kell Watts. Now, as work is done on incoming deals such as Marc Guehi, attention will rapidly turn to who else can be offloaded.

Referee confirmed

Craig Pawson will referee Newcastle United's Premier League opener against Southampton on Saturday. The South Yorkshire official, who has already refereed a Champions League qualifier this season, last took charge of United in their 3-0 FA Cup win over Sunderland back in January.

Bruno links

Talk of Bruno Guimaraes leaving Newcastle died down considerably after some early summer rumours, with the Brazilian captaining United in pre-season and speaking about his desire to achieve success on Tyneside.

However, that has not stopped a few links with potential moves away, with Bruno touted as a potential alternative to Marin Zubimendi for Liverpool. However, the Athletic report that the Reds have no interest in making a move for the midfielder.

Man City have also been linked but doubts remain whether Pep Guardiola's side would be willing to fund a move.

KEY EVENT

Almiron bid

Newcastle have turned down an offer for Miguel Almiron from MLS side Charlotte FC. The Paraguay winger has been told that he remains part of Eddie Howe's plans for the coming season.

They could return with a higher bid, but the transfer deadline in the US is August 14, so they will need to act fast. More details here.
